Asotin ( əˈsoʊtən ) is a city with the status City and the county seat of Asotin County in the US state of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Asotin had a population of 1,251. It is part of the Lewiston-Clarkston- Metropolitan Statistical Area .

history

The name "Asotin" is derived from a word from the Nez Percé language meaning "Aalbach" (English "eel creek"). The city was founded in 1878 by Alexander Sumpster. A river ferry in Asotin was established in 1881.

geography

Asotin lies at an altitude of 244 meters above sea level . The city is located on the Snake River , which forms the border with Idaho here. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies a total of 3.08 square kilometers, of which 2.72 km² are land and the rest are water.

climate

The region has very warm and dry summers with average monthly temperatures of 71.6 ° F (22 ° C). According to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification , Asotin has a warm summer Mediterranean climate (abbreviated to "Csb").

2010 Census

According to the 2010 census , Asotin had 1,251 residents, 500 households and 352 families. The population density was 460 per km². There were 537 housing units at an average density of 197.5 per km².

The population consisted of 93.5% white , 1% African American , 1.5% Indian , 0.6% Asian , 1% Pacific islanders , 0.2% other "races " And 2.2% from two or more" races " . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 2.2% of the population.

Of the 500 households, 33% had children under the age of 18, 51.6% were run by married couples living together , 13.2% by single mothers and 5.6% by single fathers; 29.6% were non-families. 24% of the households were singles and 11.2% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.5 and the average family size was 2.93.

The median age in the city was 41 years. 25.3% of the population were under 18, 6.7% between 18 and 24, 22.8% between 25 and 44, 27.8% between 45 and 64 and 17.6 65 years or older. Of the residents, 46.8% were men and 53.2% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , Asotin had 1,095 residents, 419 households and 321 families. The population density was 402.6 per km ². There were 440 housing units at an average density of 161.8 per km².

The population was 97.08% white , 0.18% African American , 1% American Indian , 0.37% Asian , 0.18% other "races" and 1.19% two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 1.55% of the population.

Of the 419 households, 38.4% had children under the age of 18, 53.9% were run by married couples living together, and 18.9% by single mothers; 23.2% were non-families. 19.3% of the households were singles and 9.1% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 2.96 people.

The median age in the city was 39 years. 29.3% of the population were under 18, 6.5% between 18 and 24, 25.4% between 25 and 44, 24.6% between 45 and 64 and 14.2 65 years or older. There were 88.8 men for every 100 women, and 81.3 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 35,083 and that of families was US $ 37,115. Men had a median income of US $ 34,844 versus US $ 21,063 for women. The per capita income was US $ 15,257. About 16.4% of families and 19.4% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 30.2% of those under 18 and 6.8% of those over 65.
