Fort Casey State Historical Park is a 189 hectare State Park in Iceland County in the US state of Washington . It is located five kilometers south of Coupeville on Whidbey Island and includes the site of the former Fort Casey coastal fortification .

history

In 1858 the US government purchased four acres of land for $ 400 to build a lighthouse on the Admiralty Head headland . The lighthouse was completed in 1861. In 1890 the site was taken over by the US Army, who built a coastal fortification on the site. The fort was named after General Thomas Lincoln Casey , a commander in the US Army Corps of Engineers . Fort Casey, together with Fort Worden and Fort Flagler, was supposed to form a triangle of fire , i.e. an area that could be taken under artillery fire from three sides in order to block Admiralty Inlet, the main access to Puget Sound . For the construction of the fort, the old lighthouse was moved and replaced in 1903 by a new lighthouse at the current location. The lighthouse is now a Historic Landmark .

investment

Use of the park is chargeable. The park is closed from November to April. In the park are the remains of the coastal fort Fort Casey and the Admiralty Head Lighthouse. The lighthouse and the fortifications can be visited and guided tours are offered through the gun batteries. The park also includes over two kilometers of coastline at Admiralty Inlet. From the park you have a wide view over the Admiralty Inlet and the Juan-de-Fuca-Strait . Nearby is Keystone Spit , which is a three-kilometer strip of land between Admiralty Inlet and Crocket Lake . There is a campsite with sanitary facilities in the park. For day trippers, there is a picnic area and other sanitary facilities at the lighthouse. The park has two boat ramps and the park is home to the ferry dock for the ferry from Whitbey Island to Port Townsend . To the east there is a cordoned off area for recreational divers.
