McMicken Iceland State Park is a 4.7 hectare State Park in Mason County in the US state of Washington . The island is located in southern Puget Sound east of Harstine Island , has over 500 meters of coastline and is primarily only accessible by boat. The island can only be reached on foot from Harstine Island at low tide.

The forested island lies in a pristine bay with good anchorage opportunities, and visitors can hike the island, spot bald eagles , and catch crabs and shellfish. The population of crustaceans and shellfish is abundant, and seals , black-throated divers and red-necked grebes can also be observed.

history

In the 19th century a Swedish sailor settled on the island, which he named Lundquist after himself . The US authorities, however, denied his claim to the island. The surveyor who was then supposed to measure the island for the official maps then gave the island its own name: McMicken. In 1974 Washington State bought the island, since then it has served as a state park and is co-administered by Jarrell Cove State Park .
