Leadbetter Point State Park is a 4.8 square kilometer state park in the US state of Washington . It is located on the northern tip of the Long Beach Peninsula northwest of Oysterville and borders directly on Willapa Bay . The Washington State Route 103 ends at the entrance of the park. The park borders directly on the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge , which protects the actual northern tip of the peninsula and large parts of Willapa Bay.

geology

The sand dunes on the northern tip of the peninsula are constantly shifting due to the change in wind, ocean currents and tides.

Flora and fauna

The state park , together with the adjacent Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, is an important resting place for migratory birds, especially in spring and fall. Tens of thousands of sea birds populate the tidal flats and salt marshes . Biologists count over 100 bird species at Leadbetter Point alone, such as brown pelicans, bald eagles, great egrets, ringed plovers , sandpipers and Hutton vireos . The dunes are partly overgrown with a forest of coastal pines and dense undergrowth of Shallon pseudo-berries and bearberries , in the interior Sitka spruces dominate the forest. The forest is a habitat for mammals such as elk , black bears and raccoons .

Tourist use

There are four hiking trails totaling 18 kilometers in length. Camping is prohibited. During the breeding season of the Kentish plover from March to September, part of the park is closed to the public.
