The Sacajawea State Park is a recreational area and a historical reserve in the city of Pasco in the State of Washington , which is 267 acres (108 ha) at the mouth of the Snake River to the Columbia River covered; The participants of the Lewis and Clark expedition rested in this area on October 16, 1805 . The state park's name comes from the Shoshonen woman Sacagawea , an active expedition member and wife of Toussaint Charbonneau , a French-Canadian interpreter and researcher. The Sacajawea Interpretive Center hosts an exhibit on Sacagawea and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

history

The park was originally a one-acre parcel donated in 1927 and maintained by members of the Pasco Chapter of the Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington to be the location of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to preserve. The lots were declared a state park in 1931; In 1938 the museum and three other buildings were built by WPA workers .

tourism

The park has facilities for picnicking, hiking, boating, fishing, and swimming. It is the starting point of the Sacagawea Heritage Trail , a paved bike path that connects the communities of the Tri-Cities area. The park's only campground is reserved for paddlers using the Northwest Discovery Water Trail .
