The Alta Lake State Park is a recreational area about 2 mi (3.2 km) southwest of Pateros (Washington) on the north bank of 220 acres (89 hectares) Alta Lake. It is located in the mountainous interior of the state. The 181 acres (73.2 hectare) state park and adjacent lake are bordered by towering stone cliffs created by glaciation , rising up to 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor and extending to the summit of Old Goat Mountain, which rises to 4,200 ft (1,280 m) above the park. The Alta Lake Road runs 2 mi (3.2 km) to the park and branches off Washington State Route 153 , which runs along the Methow River . The park is maintained by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission .

history

A jeweler and gold digger from Wilbur named the lake in 1900 after his daughter Alta Heinz. The city of Pateros transferred the land to the state in 1951 to establish a state park there. In 2014 the park was badly damaged by the Carlton Complex forest fire, which resulted in the park being closed for five weeks. Efforts to repair the damage are still ongoing.

tourism

The park offers swimming, boating, fishing, and windsurfing opportunities in, in, and on Alta Lake, which is approximately 2 mi (3.2 km) long and 0.5 mi (0.8 km) wide. There are camping and picnic areas in the park, as well as 2 mi (3.2 km) walking trails. Golf can be played at the nearby Alta Lake Golf Course.
