The Alser Straße station is an above-ground station on the Vienna underground line U6 in the 9th district of Alsergrund . It is named after the walled-in 19th century Vienna Woods Bach as called Alserstraße . The high station extends along the Hernalser belt between Kinderspitalgasse in the south and Lazarettgasse in the north.
history
The station originally belonged to the belt line of the Vienna steam light rail and was designed by Otto Wagner on behalf of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna . Its construction was completed in March 1896, the commissioning on June 1, 1898. In 1918 it was temporarily closed and reopened in 1925 as part of the new Viennese electric light rail . In addition to the pure light rail lines, the combined tram and light rail line 18G also served the station from 1925 to 1945 . In 1989 the U6 started operating. The building is entered on the east and west through the green-lacquered swing doors typical of the Otto Wagner city railway style . Staircases lead from the reception hall to the platforms. Barrier-free access by means of elevators is via the access to the Äußerer Hernalser Gürtel. It is possible to change to tram line 43 in the direction of Neuwaldegg or Schottentor and not far to line 44 in the direction of Schottentor or Dornbach . The St. Anna Children's Hospital and the nightlife area along the western belt with numerous restaurants are in the vicinity .
In 2014, the western part of the station underwent a comprehensive renovation lasting several months, which is why no trains stopped in the direction of Siebenhirten. The platform in the direction of Floridsdorf followed the following year.
