The Josefstädter Straße station is an above-ground station on the Vienna underground line U6 on the border between the 8th and the 16th district of Vienna. It is located on the median along the belt between the exit of Josefstädter Straße and Uhlplatz. The eastern exit of the station is dominated by the Breitenfeld church built between 1886 and 1898 in the style of the Italian early Renaissance . It is possible to change to tram line 2 in the direction of Ottakring or Friedrich-Engels-Platz. Line 33, the loop of which is located here, also stops here on weekdays except Saturday. On Sundays and public holidays, the track system serves to turn tram line 5 in the early morning hours.

The elevated station has two side platforms, was originally built for the belt line of the Viennese steam city railway and designed by Otto Wagner on behalf of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna . Its construction was completed in December 1895, the commissioning on June 1, 1898. After the First World War , it was temporarily closed and reopened in 1925 as part of the new Viennese electric light rail . In addition to the pure light rail lines, the combined tram and light rail line 18G also served the station from 1925 to 1945 . In 1989 the U6 started operating.

The station is entered from the east and west through the typical green-lacquered swing doors . Two staircases lead from the reception hall to the platforms. These are mostly protected from precipitation by lateral trapezoidal roofs. Generous window fronts reveal the inner and outer belt. Two elevators lead from the reception hall to the platforms, making the station barrier-free. In the southern part of the station building is the traditionalCarinapub , in the northern part a municipal facility for the homeless. In the vicinity of the station is the Brunnenmarkt with the Yppenviertel and the entertainment mile along the belt. After the partial dissolution of the open drug scene on Karlsplatz, which had existed since the 1980s, in 2010, a new scene has formed in and around the station because some of the addicts moved here.

The desolate condition of the station prompted Wiener Linien in 2011 to extensively renovate the building. For this purpose, the station was closed from July, the trains went through without stopping. Since the renovation was more complicated than originally assumed, the U6 between Alser Straße and Westbahnhof was finally completely closed until the end of August 2011. The provisional tram line E was introduced as a replacement. The U6 has been on the entire route again since August 29, 2011, the Josefstädter Straße station remained closed until November 25, 2011, and the renovation work lasted until 2013.
