The Brunnenmarkt is the longest street market in Vienna and extends in the 16th district of Vienna , Ottakring , in Brunnengasse from Thaliastrasse to Ottakringer Strasse . There are around 40 to 50 stalls in the market on Monday through Friday, while there can be 120 on Saturdays. This makes it the second largest inner-city market in Vienna after the Naschmarkt .

Historical

The market was built in 1786 in what was then the Vienna suburb of Neulerchenfeld in the former Elisabethgasse. At the intersection with Neulerchenfelder Strasse , Emperor Joseph II had an outlet fountain built, which was connected to the Hernals water line, which led from the Vienna Woods to the Hofburg . This should provide people with clean drinking water. It was not until 1873 that the street was officially named Brunnengasse . The fountain had to give way to the new horse-drawn tram in 1871 or 1872, but the market remained and is now more lively than ever.

As in the markets in Southern Europe, action is now an obligation. You can shop at the end of the day at the Brunnenmarkt or around noon at the farmers' market on Yppenplatz, because the Brunnenmarkt is a relic of an old, almost disappeared market form. It is one of the two purely street markets in Vienna and all market stalls were dismantled and taken away until 2005 after the market closed. In the meantime, Brunnengasse is completely closed to car traffic and the stands stay there overnight. From 2005 to 2010 the Brunnenmarkt was completely renovated.

Yppenmarkt

The Yppenmarkt

The Yppenmarkt is a "continuation" of the Brunnenmarkt connected to the Brunnenmarkt. It was built in 1897 on the former parade ground near Yppenheim and was originally a wholesale market for fruit and vegetables. Today almost grown together with the Brunnenmarkt, together the largest retail market in Vienna. A lively, flourishing local culture has developed on Yppenplatz since the turn of the millennium.

Brunnenmarkt and Yppenviertel were the location of various films, including Kebab mit Alles (2011), CopStories (since 2013), Die Freischwimmerin (2014), Planet Ottakring (2015) and Kebab extra hot! (2017). In 2014, the Brunnenmarkt with Yppenplatz was voted the Vienna state winner in the ORF television program 9 Places - 9 Treasures .
