Pediocactus peeblesianus f. menzelii is a form of the plant species Pediocactus peeblesianus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). English common names are "Menzel's Cactus" and "Cataract Creek Cactus". It is threatened and was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species.

description

The spherical to oval growing Pediocactus peeblesianus f. menzelii becomes 2 to 6 cm long and 2 to 4 cm wide. The beige, brownish tubular flowers are characteristic . They have a length and a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 cm. The species grows in a limited area in the northern Grand Canyon and is geographically isolated from the subspecies Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. peeblesianus and Pediocactus peeblesianus subsp. fickeiseniorum .

Geophytic features as in representatives of the genus Pediocactus section Pediocactus ( Pediocactus paradinei , Pediocactus knowltonii ) and the section Rhytidospermae ( Pediocactus bradyi and its subspecies) become clear. The flowering time is in April.

Pediocactus peeblesianus f. menzelii is hardy to minus 20 ° C when dry. Real-root cultivation in Europe is possible.

Pediocactus peeblesianus f. menzelii is one of the rarest and smallest species in the United States. The species grows endemically in Arizona on plains or limestone hills at altitudes of 1600 to 1700 m and is associated with Echinocereus fendleri .

Systematics

The name was chosen in honor of Jürgen Menzel, one of the discoverers of the species. The description as Pediocactus peeblesianus f. menzelii was made in 2000 by Miloslav Hájek .
