Pediocactus knowltonii is a species of the genus Pediocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet knowltonii honors Fred Gastman Knowlton , who discovered the species. English common names are "Knowlton's Cactus", "Knowlton's Pincushion Cactus" and "Thimble Plains Cactus"

The spherical to oval growing Pediocactus knowltonii reaches heights of 1 to 5 cm and a diameter of 1 to 3 cm. The pink, bell-shaped flowers have a length and a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 cm.

Geophytic features as well as other representatives of the Pediocactus section ( Pediocactus paradinei ) and the Rhytidospermae section ( Pediocactus bradyi and subspecies) become clear. It is the rarest, smallest and evolutionarily most developed species of the genus. The occurrence is limited and at the same time the smallest in the USA.

Pediocactus knowltonii is hardy to minus 20 ° C when dry. Real-root cultivation in Europe is possible. Pediocactus knowltonii is threatened and was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pediocactus knowltonii grows endemically in the border area of Colorado and New Mexico in the Great Basin Desert on gravelly soil in sparse conifers at altitudes of about 2000 meters. This species is often associated with Echinocereus fendleri , Echinocereus triglochidiatus , Escobaria vivipara and Opuntia polyacantha .

The first description was in 1960 by Lyman David Benson .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
