Hammond Island , called Keriri by its inhabitants , is a small island in the south of the Torres Strait Islands archipelago . It is located in the subgroup of the Thursday Islands and is less than a kilometer away from Thursday Island , the main island in Torres Strait.
The hilly island is about 6.2 kilometers long and up to 2.7 kilometers wide. Smaller settlements can be found on the southeast coast. In 2001 there were 204 people on the island.
Administratively, Hammond Island is one of the Inner Islands , the southernmost island region in the Torres Shire administrative district of the Australian state of Queensland .
