Dauan Island is a small granite island in the Torres Strait Islands near the mainland of Papua New Guinea . With the island of Boigu located 30 km to the north-west and the island of Saibai located 6 km to the east, it is administratively one of the Top Western Islands , an island region in the Torres Shire administrative district .

Geographically, the northernmost mountain of the Australian Great Dividing Range , the largest mountain range on the continent, is located on the approximately 4 km² island . The highest peak is the centrally located Mount Cornwallis (272 m).

According to the 2006 census , Dauan had 153 inhabitants, after 120 in 2001 and 67 on December 5, 1879. The settlement took place on a narrow coastal strip against the background of steep hills. There is no runway for airplanes on the island, so arrival is only possible by boat or helicopter.
