Yam Island , also called Iama , is an island in the center of the Torres Strait Islands archipelago . It is 65 kilometers from the south coast of Papua New Guinea and 95 kilometers from the north coast of Australia .
Administratively, it belongs to the Central Islands , an island region in the Torres Shire administrative district of the Australian state of Queensland .
The 173 hectare hilly island is surrounded by a fringing reef . In the middle of the island, an 800-meter-long runway for small aircraft was created. The only settlement is on the west coast; according to the 2006 census , 311 people live on Yam Island . In 2001 there were 338.
