Darnley Island , called Erub by the locals , is the northeasternmost of the inhabited Torres Strait Islands . It is located about 200 km northeast of Thursday Island , the "main island" in Torres Strait.

The hilly, flat overgrown island is of volcanic origin, of irregular shape and about 5.5 km². The highest elevation of 125 meters can be found in the northwest. Some smaller settlements are also on the northwest and southwest coast. After the census of 2006 320 people lived on the island, slightly more than in 2001 (316).

Administratively, Darnley belongs to the Eastern Islands , the easternmost island region in the Torres Shire administrative district of Queensland ( Australia ). The region also includes Murray Island, around 45 km southeast, and Stephens Island, 25 km west .

Darnley Island is owned by the Meuran, one of the eight tribes of Murray Island . This tribe also owns the reefs and sandbars up to Bramble Cay in the far northeast of the Torres Strait Islands.

Darnley Island is part of the Parish of Umaga , a lowest level cadastral district that also includes Bramble Cay , the Black Rocks, Anchor Cay and East Cay .
