Moa Island , also known as Banks Island , is a centrally located island in the west of the Torres Strait Islands archipelago .
It is only separated from its neighboring island Badu by a 3 km wide waterway ( Banks Channel ). The highest peak is Banks Peak in the northeast, with a height of 113 meters.
Administratively, both islands belong to the Western Islands , an island region in the Torres Shire administrative district of the Australian state of Queensland .
Moa Island is the second largest of the Torres Strait Islands with an area of over 170 km². The island rises up to 130 meters above sea level in the southwest, is sparsely overgrown, but has natural freshwater resources .
On the island are the two places Kubin on the southwest coast and St. Pauls on the east coast. They are connected by a narrow, winding road 18 kilometers in length. There is a 980 meter long runway for small aircraft near Kubin .
After the census of 2006 439 people lived on Moa Iceland , of which 201 in Kubin and 238 in St. Pauls. According to the 2001 census , the population was 394 people.
