Map of the Torres Strait Islands

The Torres Strait Islands are a group of 274 small islands in the sea passage ( Torres Strait ) between the northern tip of Australia , Cape York , and Papua New Guinea .

Politically, the majority of the islands belong to the Australian state of Queensland .

The islands along the south coast of Papua New Guinea belong to the Western Province . The most important of these islands is Daru Island , on which the capital of the same name of the western province of Papua New Guinea is located.

Only 21 of the more than 270 Torres Strait Islands are inhabited, including 19 Australian islands and the islands of Daru and Parama, which belong to Papua New Guinea. The 19 inhabited Australian islands correspond to 18 communities . A community corresponds to an inhabited island, with two exceptions:

• Moa Island is divided into two communities (Kubin and St. Pauls)
• Prince of Wales Island, Friday Island and Packe Island together form the Murralag community

The islands named after the days of the week Wednesday Island (to the east of it the two small Tuesday Islets ), Thursday Island and Friday Island got their western names from William Bligh , who crossed the Torres Strait heading west ( Kupang ) in the first week of June 1789 after the mutiny on the Bounty and came across these individual larger islands on the respective days of the week (Tuesday, June 2nd to Friday, June 5th, 1789). The location of these islands can be used to trace the route of Bligh's boat. No islands were named after them on the remaining days of the week, as Bligh had not yet reached the Torres Strait Islands on Monday and passed through the following Saturday.
