Keats Island is one of the smaller permanently inhabited islands in Howe Sound , British Columbia . The island is part of the Sunshine Coast Regional District and is located between Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast and Bowen Island . Keats Island is largely covered in dense forest. There are only a few small meadows. As with most islands in Howe Sound, the bottom is very rocky and only thinly covered with earth.

There are no official towns or communities on the island. The main points of settlement are the two piers, Keats Landing in the west and Eastborne in the east of the island. Around 80 people live on the island all year round. However, numerous other short-term residents come in the summer months or on the weekends.

On the west coast of Keats Island is the Plumper Cove Marine Provincial Park, one of the oldest marine provincial parks in British Columbia.

history

At the time of its discovery by European explorers, the island was a hunting and settlement area for the Sechelt and Squamish .

With the Spanish exploration of the American west coast, this bay was first mapped in 1791. During the subsequent English exploration by Captain George Vancouver in 1794, it was then named after the Vice Admiral of the British Royal Navy Sir Richard Keats .

traffic

Keats Island is served several times a day by small passenger ferry from the Langdale Ferry Terminal at Gibsons. This passenger ferry also serves Gambier Island on its tour and is not operated by BC Ferries, but by another company on their behalf. The total travel time is around 30 minutes.
