Gibsons is a small town in the southern part of the Sunshine Coast , in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The community is located about 40 kilometers as the crow flies northwest of Vancouver on the Sechelt Peninsula and belongs to the Sunshine Coast Regional District . The village is on the Strait of Georgia and at the entrance to Howe Sound .

history

Originally the country was settled by the First Nations , so the history goes back further than the historiography dominated by European immigrants. In the area around what is now Gibsons lived and still live mainly the Squamish , but also the Sechelt .

The “European” part of history in this region begins, after the discovery by various seafarers such as George Vancouver in 1792, with the arrival of the fur traders of the Hudson's Bay Company . Apart from the fur trade, the region initially remained largely untouched by European settlers. This only changed in the late 19th century.

The original village was called Gibson's Landing and was established in 1886 when George Gibson landed here with his two sons after a ship accident. In 1938, the village community, which the settlement had in the meantime received after its recognition, was given a post office. In 1947 the post office was renamed and the “landing” in the name was dropped. The parish was then renamed in the same way.

Demographics

The last census in 2011 showed a population of 4,437 inhabitants for the municipality. The community's population has increased by 6.1% compared to the 2006 census, which is slightly below the trend for the average for the entire province of British Columbia, where the population grew by 7.0% at the same time. With an average age of 51.4 years, the population here is also significantly older than in the rest of the province, which has an average age of 41.9 years.

education

Gibsons is part of School District # 46 Sunshine Coast , which is responsible for the communities on the Sunshine Coast and is based here. In the small community there is an elementary school and a secondary school .

politics

The granting of local self-government for the settlement took place on March 4, 1929 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ). In the course of time, the status of the settlement changed several times and since December 17, 1982 the community has the status of a small town ( town ).

The mayor of the township is Wayne Rower. Together with four other citizens to form for three years the Council ( Council ) of the city.

economy

In 2006, the most important economic sectors in terms of the number of employees were: manufacturing, trade and forestry. However, many professionals also commute to Vancouver for work.

The median income of Gibsons employees in 2005 was an above-average C $ 26,038, while at the same time the average for the entire province of British Columbia was C $ 24,867. The income gap between men (C $ 34,333) and women (C $ 19,474) in Gibsons is well above the provincial average (  - men = C $ 31,598,  - women = C $ 19,997).

climate

An average of 1369.1 mm of precipitation falls per year. More than 95% of this falls as rain and less than 5% as snow. August is the driest and November the wettest month of the year. In July and August the average temperature usually fluctuates between 13 and 21 ° C, in December and January between 1 and 6 ° C. The highest measured temperature in the last few decades was 31.0 ° C and the lowest was −12.0 ° C.

traffic

Gibson's location is problematic in terms of traffic, as the small town is located on a peninsula and this can only be reached by ferry and not on public roads. The city is located on Highway 101 as a north-south connection . The highway ends in the Langdale settlement adjacent to Gibsons at the BC Ferries' Langdale Ferry Terminal . For the Sunshine Coast regional district, the ferry connection from here to Vancouver is the only connection to the mainland.

The small town is not connected to the railway network and has no airport.
