Gambier Iceland is an island near Vancouver ( British Columbia , Canada ). It is named after Lord James Gambier (born October 13, 1756 in the Bahamas, † April 19, 1833 in Ivor near Uxbridge), British admiral and governor of Newfoundland from 1802 to 1803 . With this naming, the line was continued in naming the islands in Howe Sound after a participant in the naval battle of the Glorious First of June .

The 6,893 acre island is located in Howe Sound Fjord , 10 kilometers north of Horseshoe Bay .

The island, which is sparsely populated with only 200 inhabitants, is less visited than the neighboring island of Bowen Island , which is very popular with tourists. Nevertheless, its population triples in the summer season.

Gambier Island can only be reached by boat. A gravel road allows car traffic between the small communities on the island. There is a shop and a hotel ( bed and breakfast ) on Gambier Island . The main settlement on the island is called New Brighton. Gambier Harbor, another small settlement, is to the east.

The residents of the island elect two representatives to the Island Trust , an association of independent local administrations to protect the environment, preserve the landscape and promote the economic development of British Columbia's islands.

In the southeast of the island is the Halkett Bay Marine Provincial Park .
