Deliverance Island , in German about "Redemption Island ", called Warul Kawa in the local Kala-Kaiwau-Ya language , with the German meaning "Turtle Island ", is a small uninhabited island in the Torres Strait Islands . It is located about 34 km south of the coast of western Papua New Guinea and 162 km northwest of the Cape York Peninsula , but still belongs to the Australian state of Queensland . The closest inhabited island is Boigu Island, 68 km northwest . The nearest island is the small island of Kerr, 7.5 km further south . Traditionally, Warul Kawa, which was declared an Indigenous Protected Area in 2001 and thus enjoys special protection status, belongs to the inhabitants of Boigu.
Deliverance Island extends over a length of 1700 meters, is a maximum of 470 meters wide and reaches a height of only two meters. The completely forested, elongated island is surrounded by a watt-like shallow water area, which is dominated by brown algae and green algae . There is also some seaweed , but only little coral growth . The island and its surroundings are home to two internationally significant populations of sea turtles . It is one of the largest colonies of barrier reef turtles . There are numerous migrating green turtles in the shallow water area .
Administratively, Deliverance Island is part of the Top Western Islands , an island region in Torres Shire County .
