Eastern Islands (Torres Strait)

Eastern Islands refers to an island region in the Torres Shire administrative district of the Australian state of Queensland . The area includes several Torres Strait Islands in the extreme northeast of the Torres Strait waterway .

In the region, which borders directly on the Coral Sea , there are numerous coral reefs and around 12 small islands , three of which are inhabited. The administrative center is Murray Island (Mer). Also, Darnley Iceland and Stephens Iceland are inhabited. The largest islands are Darnley Island , Murray Island, and East Cay . The remaining islands are Anchor Cay, Dauar, Campbell, Waier, Nepean, Bramble Cay, Black Rocks and Underdown. Despite their names, Don Cay and Canoe Cay are not islands (anymore), but reefs.

The total area is 14 km², and the population is 881 (as of 2006).
