The Egerviadukt is a railway bridge over the Eger ( Ohře ) near Cheb in the Czech Republic .
history
The bridge was built by the Kgl. Saxon State Railways as part of the construction of the Vogtland State Railroad from Herlasgrün via Oelsnitz / Vogtl. and Franzensbad to Eger . In total, the construction cost almost 500,000 thalers . The viaduct consists of eleven 19.8 m wide and four other, smaller openings. At the beginning there are dams over 20 m high and several hundred meters long on both sides.
On November 1, 1865, trains began operating across the viaduct. In addition to the Saxon Herlasgrün – Eger line, the track of the Bavarian Cheb – Oberkotzau line of the Hof-Egerer Railway also ran over the bridge.
At the end of the Second World War on April 12, 1945, the Egerviadukt was so badly hit in a bombing raid by the US Air Force that train traffic was no longer possible. The damage report of the Deutsche Reichsbahn dated April 13, 1945 noted the following damage:
- Direct hit on pillars I, IV, XV
- Bull's eye on opening 1, 2, 9, 10, 15, 16
- Hit at opening 4 and pillar V
On May 19, 1951, the reconstruction of the bridge in its old form was completed. Since then, only one track has run over the bridge, which is still sufficient today due to the reduced volume of traffic.
