Zhaoshu Dao ( Chinese  趙 述 島  /  赵 述 岛 , Pinyin Zhàoshù Dǎo ), Vietnam. Đảo Cây , engl. Tree Island is a coral island of approx. 0.22 km² in the Xuande Qundao archipelago of the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea . The island belongs to the city of Sansha in the Chinese province of Hainan . In the context of the territorial conflicts in the South China Sea , Vietnam and the Republic of China claim the Xisha Islands on Taiwan and thus also Zhaoshu Dao.

Zhaoshu Dao is about 700 m long and at its widest point almost 450 m wide. The highest point of the island rises 4 m above the water surface. Most of the island's area has dense vegetation, including numerous coconut palms . The island is inhabited by around 200 fishermen , all of whom come from the city of Qionghai .

history

The government of the Republic of China gave the island the name "Shu Dao" (树 岛), or "Tree Island" in 1935, which was changed in 1947 to its current name. The current name is reminiscent of Zhao Shu , the envoy of the Hongwu emperor of the Ming dynasty , who was sent by him on a diplomatic mission to the kingdom of Srivijaya in Sumatra in 1369 .

Administrative structure

The island belongs to the village of Qilianyu (七 连 屿 村) of the city of Sansha, whose seat of government is on Zhaoshu Dao and which also includes the eight immediately adjacent "Seven Islets" ( Qilian Yu ). Zhaoshu Dao itself is also often counted as the ninth island to the Qilian Yu.
