Yongxing Dao ( Chinese  永興 島  /  永兴 岛 , Pinyin Yǒngxīng Dǎo ), Vietnamese. Đảo Phú Lâm , engl. Woody Island , German Woody Island , is a coral island of about 2 km² in the South China Sea belonging to the Xuande Qundao ( Chinese  ú 群島 , Pinyin Xuāndé Qúndǎo , English Amphitrite Group ) of the Paracel Islands (Xisha Islands) .

The island has been controlled by the Republic of China since 1946 and the People's Republic of China since 1956 , but is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan (Republic of China).

history

Japan occupied the island during World War II . After the Japanese surrender , the Chinese government renamed Woody Island "Yongxing" after one of their warships, the Yung-hsing (永興 號).

Since July 24, 2012, the seat of the people's government of the Chinese prefecture-level city of Sansha , Hainan Province , has been located on the island, which was previously also the administrative seat of the "Department of the Xisha, Nansha and Zhongsha Islands".

Administrative structure

There are two administrative units of the city of Sansha on the island:

  • Resident Community Yongxing (永兴社区), seat of the city government;
  • Yongxing Village (永兴 村).
