from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Australian islands is a selection of the 8,222 islands that Australia has within its national maritime borders. It is arranged according to the Australian states.

The largest islands in Australia are Tasmania 68,332 km²; Melville Island 5,786 km²; Kangaroo Island 4,416 km²; Groote Eylandt 2,285 km²; Bathurst Island 1,693 km²; Fraser Island 1,653 km²; Flinders Island  1,359 km²; King Island  1,091 km² and Mornington Island  1,002 km².

Australia is often referred to as an island continent or island, although this is misleading because it is a continent.
