Dent Island , also known as Hamilton West , is an inhabited island in the Whitsunday Islands , which consist of 74 islands. It is located west of Hamilton Island off the coast of Queensland , Australia .
discovery
The island was discovered by the British Royal Navy in 1866 when Commander GS Nares drove through the Whitsundays Islands in search of a northern passage. Previously, Dent Island was believed to be part of the larger Hamilton Island, which is 800 meters to the east separated by Dent Passage . Nares named the island after the ship's officer Albert Dent on the HMS Salamander.
Tourist information
The island is frequently visited by day-trippers arriving from nearby Hamilton Island. On the island there is a national park and the Hamilton Island Golf Club , which has been open since August 2009. The golf course has 18 holes and is the only golf course on the islands of Australia where championships are held. In 1879 the first lighthouse in this sea area was built on the island . The light source has been produced by solar energy since 1981 and there has been no lighthouse keeper there since 1987.
More Dent Islands
Another island called Dent Island is located in Queensland on the Proserpine River , named after the 33-ton steamer Ada Dent that sank off Lady Elliot Island on June 21, 1907. There is another island in New Zealand called Dent Island . It is a rocky island protruding steeply from the sea, which is counted to Campbell Island in the southern Pacific Ocean and is part of the sub-Antarctic New Zealand Offshore Islands .
