Dent Island |
Dent Island is one of the Campbell Islands , a group of small sub-Antarctic islands off the New Zealand island of Campbell Island in the southern Pacific Ocean .
geography
The 635 m long and up to 440 m wide island is 1.6 km north of Cattle Bay off the southwestern headland of Campbell Island . It rises up to 154 m from the sea with its steep cliffs .
geology
Dent Island consists of basalt rock. The island was formed by erosion and was originally part of the former volcano that formed Campbell Island in the late Cenozoic .
Flora and fauna
In 1975, Campbell's duck, believed to be extinct, was rediscovered on Dent Island . The endemic species disappeared on Campbell Island because its eggs were eaten by rats introduced by Europeans, so that no offspring could arise. Since Dent Island was rat free, few specimens of the duck species could survive there. They were used to raise and expand their population, so that in 2005, after months of preparation, 33 ducks were released for release on Campbell Island , which had been freed from rats by then.
World natural heritage
As part of the Campbell Islands, the island now belongs to in 1998 recognized UNESCO - World Heritage in which the sub-Antarctic island groups The Snares , Bounty Islands , Antipodes Islands , Auckland Islands and Campbell Island group have received protection status pronounced.
