discovery

Cumberland Islands were named by James Cook in 1770 when he was sailing through what he called the Whitsunday Passage. The name for the Cumberland archipelago comes from Henry the younger brother of the English King George III. the Duke of Cumberland , who supported his journey at the time. Whitsunday Island was named by Cook on June 3, 1770, on a Whitsunday.

Island and archipelagos

The Cumberland Islands include the Whitsundays Islands Group , Lindeman Islands Group , Anchor Islands and Sir James Smith Islands . Today, the northern islands are usually considered to be part of the Whitsunday Islands and the Molle Islands when viewed from Shute Harbor . Officially, however, they are still assigned to the Cumberland Islands and also called that.

The islands of Brampton Island , Carlisle, Scawfell, Goldsmith, Cockermouth, Keswick and St. Bees also belong to the Cumberland Islands.

National parks are located on Brampton Island, Carlisle, Scawfell, Goldsmith, Cockermouth, Keswick and St. Bees. Camping is possible at Goldsmith, Carlisle, Cockermouth, Scawfell and St. Bees.
