The Lindeman Islands form a group of 14 islands in the south of the Great Barrier Reef . They are now considered a subset of the Whitsunday Islands . Officially, they are still a group of the Cumberland Islands . The name Cumberland Islands goes back to the naming of James Cook in 1770. Most of the islands are uninhabited.

The 14 islands were declared Lindeman Islands National Park in 1941 .

Lindeman Island
Inhabited Lindeman Island ( Yakaima in the Aboriginal language) can be reached from Mackay by boat or plane. It was named in 1868 by Commander HM Bingham on the HMS Virago after his ship's officer George Lindeman. A large group of the Ngaro lived on the island , the only aboriginal seafarers . Most of them left the island after the European settlement.
The national park has around 20 km of hiking trails, the Butterfly Valley and Mount Oldfield, which rises 212 meters above sea level. The mountain top offers a panorama of Pentcost Island , Hamilton Island and the Whitsunday Islands . The island offers opportunities to snorkel and collect oysters, orchids grow in the mangroves and over 90 species of birds can be seen. Dolphins swim in the ocean year round, and humpback whales can be seen from July to November . There are numerous small islands around Lindeman Island.
As early as 1923, Angus Nicholson founded a resort on Lindeman Island , which became the first Club Med Resort in Australia in 1992 . The resort was sold to a Chinese company in 2012. There is a campsite at the boat harbor in the north of the island.
Thomas Island
The uninhabited island is often visited by day trippers. Sandy beaches run around the whole island. Orchids grow on a rocky beach and bloom in November. Numerous fish and sea turtles swim in the waters . Thomas Island is also called Dead Dog Island , which goes back to an experience of an exploration trip in 1925. Camping is possible, but you must bring your own drinking water, and fires and generators are not allowed. There are also garbage cans on the island.
Seaforth Island
The uninhabited Seaforth Island offers anglers a great opportunity to fish; Boats can moor on a boat ramp.
