history

In this sea area 9,000 years lived long the Aboriginestamm the Ngaro that already in the time of James Cook did not stop there anymore. It is believed that the name of Commander Bedwell was given to the island in 1879 when he gave the islands the names of cities in English Cumberland.

In 1916 Joseph Busuttin and his family were the first European settlers. Two of his sons built a resort in 1933 and the SS Canberra steamer brought tourists to the island. A son of Busuttin sold the resort and left the island in 1959. A runway was built in 1965 and the first saltwater swimming pool in 1967. The largest resort on the island, Brampton Resort, was acquired by Trans Australia Airlines in 1985 , re-sold and sold in 1997. The new owner invested $ 3 million and sold it to the current operator, Voyages.
