Bernd Hockemeyer (born October 27, 1935 in Bremen ; † May 9, 2020 ) was a German entrepreneur , politician ( CDU ) and Hanseatic patron .

Hockemeyer was the son of an entrepreneur. He completed high school by 1954 and then a two-year retail trade apprenticeship in Hamburg . He studied economics at the University of Hamburg and the University of Munich . In 1960 he completed his studies with a degree in business administration.

Entrepreneur

A native of Bremen Hanseatic businessman explained after graduation as Managing Partner the company Gebrüder Thiele (Thiele & fendel group). This was then headed by his son Martin. The company was founded in Vegesack in 1848 by Hermann Ernst Thiele . In 1896 Carl Buermeyer and Wilhelm Hockemeyer took over management. Bernd Hockemeyer expanded the international business from 1960. The group of companies employs 1,300 people, among others, in England, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Poland and Hungary as well as in East Asia and the USA. The annual turnover in 2001 was around 900 million marks for commercial products in the field of tools, hardware, porcelain, glass, ceramics, gardening tools and leisure articles.

Merchant, Hanseatic and politician

From 1975 to 1979 he was a member of the Bremen citizenship for the CDU .

In addition to his entrepreneurial and political work, he was active in numerous functions and honorary positions. He was a member of the supervisory board of the Bremer Lagerhausgesellschaft (BLG). From 1981 to 2002 he was a member of the administrative board of Sparkasse Bremen and from 1986 to 1994 chairman of the supervisory board of Kreditbank-Bankverein AG . As a member of the Board of Governors, he was involved in founding and developing the International University Bremen (IUB).

As a member of the plenary session of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce from 1985 to 2002, he was President from 1997 to 2000. His constructive cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce and Bremen politics is important. In 1999, as President, he initiated the Chamber of Commerce symposium How much art and culture does Bremen need? Since 2001, the working group economy and culture , the cultural guidelines developed the Chamber of Commerce and publishes.

Art patron

The special focus of the art collector and opera lover was the promotion of art in Bremen. He and his wife founded the Bernd and Eva Hockemeyer Foundation . In 2000, Hockemeyer played a decisive role in the repatriation of 101 important works of art from the Bremen Kunsthalle , which Russian soldiers had taken with them in 1945. In return, through private financial commitment, he brought about the return of the amber mosaic to Russia.

Hockemeyer was chairman of the bremer school offensive , which was founded in 2000 and promotes sponsorships for schools in Bremen along with important personalities and Bremen companies. In 2010 he was asked by the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen to take care of the Weserburg Museum on the Teerhof .

Hockemeyer was the father of four children.

Bernd Hockemeyer died at the age of 84 on May 9, 2020. On May 13, the Bremen Senate commemorated Hockemeyers with a minute's silence.
