Henry, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn (* October 27 . Jul / 7. November  1745 greg. In Leicester House , London ; †  18th September 1790 ) was a British prince.

Life

Henry was the sixth son of Friedrich Ludwig von Hannover and his wife Augusta . On October 22, 1766, shortly before his 21st birthday, he was raised to Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn and Earl of Dublin .

He joined the Royal Navy in 1768 , where he rose to admiral.

It was alleged that on March 4, 1767, he allegedly secretly married a common town woman, Olive Wilmot (later Mrs. Payne). Although the duke's paternity was never established, they allegedly had a child, Olivia Wilmot (1772–1834). His marriage on October 2, 1772 to Lady Anne Horton (or Houghton; the daughter of Simon Luttrell, 1st Earl of Carhampton , and widow of Christopher Horton of Catton Hall) triggered the Royal Marriages Act 1772 , which allowed every descendant of George II. Forbidden to marry without the consent of the monarch.

James Cook named the Cumberland Islands off the coast of Australia and Cumberland Bay in Antarctica after him.
