The Easter Group , literally German translation Ostergruppe , is a small archipelago in the Indian Ocean , located about 60 km off the Western Australian coast. It forms the middle of the three atoll -like groups of islands in the Houtman-Abrolhos archipelago, arranged in a north-south line .
The islands lie on a reef platform that is around 22 km long and up to 18 km wide. The Easter Group is 12 km south of the Wallabi Islands' Evening Reef and is separated from them by the Middle Channel . It is located 10 km northwest of the Pelsaert Islands , separated by the Zeewijk Channel .
The main island of Rat Island is by far the largest island in the group and the fifth largest in the entire Houtman Abrolhos archipelago. It is 1.6 km long and almost 600 meters wide in the north. Their area is 65.3 hectares . It is located in the center of the lagoon and can be reached via the Good Friday Bay (" Good Friday Bay ") in the north. Good Friday Bay provides a safe anchorage. There is a jetty on the northeast side.
Islands
The Easter Group includes 28 officially named islands and 26 only unofficially named small islands and rock formations such as B. “Campbell Islet” , each of which is only a few hundred square meters.
A subset of the Easter Group, the Eastern Islands (eastern islands) . These form a separate small atoll-like structure that is separated from the rest of the Easter Group by the 1.7 km wide Eastern Passage .
