Newman Island is an icy and 25 km long island off the Ruppert coast of the west Antarctic Marie-Byrd-Land . It lies in the middle of the Nickerson Ice Shelf .
The United States Geological Survey mapped them using their own surveys and using aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1959 to 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1966 after James Franklin Newman, a staff officer in Task Force 43 at the operation Deep Freeze of 1966.
