Great Palm Island (also Palm Island , name used by the Aborigines : Bwgcolman ) is the main island of the Palm Islands off the coast of Queensland in Australia . In 2016, 2,446 people lived on the island.
geography
The island is located about 65 kilometers northwest of Townsville and has an area of 55 km². The official surface area of 70.9 km² includes nine smaller islands in the group (essentially the entire archipelago with the exception of Pelorus Island , Orpheus Island and Albino Rock ), which belong to the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island . It is 15.9 km long and up to 10 km wide. The highest point is Mount Bentley at 554 meters.
The capital of the same name, Palm Island, is located on the west coast.

The kangaroo species Petrogale assimilis occurs on Great Palm Island .

The name of the island goes back to James Cook , who toured the island in 1770.
