geography
The Shire is located off the east coast of the state in the Coral Sea about 220 km south of Cairns and 1170 km north of the capital Brisbane . It consists of the main island, Great Palm Island , and several smaller islands.
In addition to the main settlement of Palm Island on the west side of the main island, there are three other small settlements in the Shire.
history
The archipelago was named by James Cook on his voyage of discovery in 1770. In 1918, Palm Island was chosen as the resettlement site for a cyclone- ravaged settlement on the Hull River, and later Aborigines from many other areas joined them. On the island, which was under official administration until 1986, there were repeated unrest and uprisings. In 2005, Palm Island was placed under local government as the Aboriginal Shire.
administration
The Palm Island Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
