Penguin Island is an approximately 840 meter long island in the Indian Ocean , almost 800 meters off the west coast of Australia near Rockingham (state of Western Australia ) and 50 km south of Perth city center, from where it can be reached by public transport in around an hour . Most of the vegetation consists of low vegetation; there are only a few larger bushes and trees.
Penguin Island is home to numerous birds such as cormorants and, at certain times of the year, little penguins . The latter are the namesake for the island and can also be found all year round in a Discovery Station on the island , which can be visited by tourists. From the beginning of June to the middle of September the island is closed during the penguin breeding season.
On the island there are several kilometers as lands laid out hiking trails on which the island can be explored. There is also the option of starting out from Penguin Island on tours with a glass-bottom boat to neighboring islands, where, for example, sea lions live.
