The island Armit Iceland is located about 17 kilometers east of Airlie Beach located in Queensland , Australia . It is counted to the Northern Islands Group , the northern subgroup of the Whitsunday Islands .
It was named after the ship's officer Robert Armit, who was on the HMS Salamander under Commander George Nares in 1866 while searching for a northern passage through the Whitsunday Islands . The island was also known as Wedge Island .
Next to Armit Island is Little Armit Island and two small reefs jutting out of the water. In the 1890s, a settler named Heron is said to have stayed temporarily on the large Armit Island. The island can only be reached by boat and not by any shipping line.
The island has a sandy beach and is forested. There is a small campsite on the island which, due to bird and animal protection, can only be used by a maximum of 12 self-sufficient people from October 1st to March 31st each year. Open fires and the use of generators are prohibited.
