The Furneaux Group ( English Furneaux Group ) is one of about 60 islands existing group of islands at the eastern end of Bass Strait . The islands belong to the Australian state of Tasmania .

The islands were named after the British explorer Tobias Furneaux , who explored the area in 1773. The islands themselves were explored by Matthew Flinders in February 1798 .

The largest islands in the group are Flinders Island , Cape Barren Island and Clarke Island . There are 5 settlements on Flinders Island: Killiecrankie, Emita, Lady Barron, Cape Barren Island and Whitemark. The latter is the municipal administration center of the Flinders local government area , which is formed from the islands. These places have 800 inhabitants, the total population of the archipelago is around 850 inhabitants.

The historically significant Aboriginal Dolly Dalrymple was born on the islands.

The New Year Island group with the main island King Island at the western end of the Bass Strait and the Kent group northwest of the Furneaux group in the direction of Australia are not included in the archipelago.
