South Molle Island is an island in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The island lies in Molle Islands National Park and belongs to a subgroup of the Whitsunday Islands (Whitsunday Islands), the eight islands comprehensive Molle Islands . These are officially counted among the Cumberland Islands . South Molle Island is the largest of the Molle Islands.

South Molle Island is one of the 17 islands of the 74 archipelago of the Whitsunday Islands, which is inhabited and also has a hotel resort. It is located just off the Australian coast and can be reached from the nearby Shute Harbor by ship or by aircraft landing on water. The closest location is Airlie Beach .
South Molle Island was formed as an island in an ice age when the polar ice melted. It is named after Colonel George James Molle , who was Lieutenant Governor in New South Wales during the British colonial era . Before the European settlement, the Ngaro lived in this island area for 9,000 years, a tribe of the Aborigines who lived nomadically on the islands and fished and hunted there. After conflicts with the European colonialists, this tribe went under. They made their stone tools on South Molle Island.
In front of the island towards Whitsunday Island are the small uninhabited islands of Goat Island (goat island), Denman Island and Planton Island. In the immediate vicinity there are two other tourist islands, Daydream Island and Long Island . From Bauer Bay, the small uninhabited Mid Molle Island and the larger North Molle Island can be seen. Planes can land in front of Bauer Bay.
Tourist information
There are several bays and beaches on South Molle Island: Oyster Bay, Turtel Bay, Pine Bay, Woddy Bay, Sandy Bay and Bauer Bay. On the island it is possible to hike to the fresh water lake in the middle of the island and the hills Spion Kop, The Horn, Mount Jeffreys and Lamond Hill. At low tide, Goat Island is within walking distance of South Molle Island . The South Molle Island Resort on the island has 200 rooms and a nine- hole golf course , but has been temporarily out of service since 2005 after four violent cyclones.
