The Daydream Iceland (formerly West Molle Iceland ) is located near the nature reserve of the Great Barrier Reef near the Whitsunday Islands . The tourist island in Queensland , Australia , is one of the Molle Islands , a group of islands that is now part of the Whitsunday Islands. Officially it belongs to the Cumberland Islands . The island was formerly known as West Molle Island before the Daydream Island Resort & Spa wellness center was built on it. It is located in the Molle Islands National Park .
history
Paddy Murray, an Army major, opened the first resort on the island back in 1933. Reginald Ansett took over the resort in 1947 and closed it during the economically difficult post-war years of 1953. In 1967 it was reopened by a businessman from the Gold Coast .
The name West Molle Island comes from the former port in the Molle Islands area , Port Molle, and was given to the island in May 1881 by Captain JFLP Maclear of the HMS Alert. In 1989 the name change from West Molle Island to Daydream Island was approved by government agencies. The current owner, The Williams Corporation , took over the island in November 1999 and built the Daydream Island Resort & Spa .
Tourist information
Daydream Island can be reached by boat or helicopter from Hamilton Island or Shute Harbor . In the immediate vicinity of the island are the islands of North Mole Island , Mid Mole Island and South Mole Island . The distance to the coastline of Queensland is about 5 kilometers.
The island is not big, it is one kilometer long and 500 meters wide. The island has a subtropical climate and has three sandy beaches where water sports, such as paragliding and jet skiing , can be practiced. There are coral reefs around the islands where tourists go scuba diving. On the small island there are opportunities to play tennis, volleyball and badminton, as well as a mini golf course. Excursions to the Whitsunday Islands or the Great Barrier Reef can be made from the island .
The Daydream Island Resort & Spa has been located on this island since 2001 , which was built with a cost of $ 40 million over a period of two years. This resort has won awards such as the Association Awards for Excellence , Best Privately Owned Resort and Accommodation in 2004 Queensland 400 Business Awards, and Gold Award for Most Popular Resort Spa in 2004 Holidays for Couples Reader's Choice Awards .
