Ninth Island is an island on the Bass Strait in southeast Australia .

The island is approximately 1.3 kilometers long, 550 meters wide and has an area of 32  hectares . It is part of the Waterhouse Island Group and is located 11.7 kilometers off the northeast coast of Tasmania . Most of the island is privately owned and has been badly damaged in the past from pasture use and frequent fires. In July 1995, she was hit by the oil spill from the sinking of the MV Iron Baron , killing between 2000 and 6000 little penguins on the island .

The island has not yet had a jetty or a landing strip for planes and can therefore only be reached by helicopter.

Around 1988/89, Ninth Island was bought for AU $ 64,000  . In February 2015, the island went on sale for AU $ 500,000. On July 11, 2015, it was sold at auction for AU $ 1.19 million.

Ninth Island is part of the Dorset Council territory.

The island is officially recognized as a protected area as there is a breeding colony of the short-tailed shearwater on the island. It is part of the Ninth and Little Waterhouse Islands Important Bird Area (IBA). It has been classified by BirdLife International because it is home to more than one percent of the total black face scar population.

Of the 32 hectares of Ninth Island, the Ninth Island Conservation Area was designated in 2012 with a size of 26.4 hectares. The reserve includes the land around the island's central hill and extends to the shore. In addition, the land below the flood edge has been declared Tidal Crown Land , administered by the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service .
