Cockatoo Island is an island in the Australian state of Western Australia . The island is located in the Buccaneer Archipelago in front of King Sound . In 2000 it had 35 residents.

Cockatoo Island is located in the northern Buccaneer Archipelago, around 5.9 kilometers from the Australian coast. There are seven named bays on the island, West Bay , Back Bay , No. 1 North Bay , No. 2 North Bay , No. 3 North Bay , Copper Bay and East Bay .
There are 35 people living on the island (as of 2000), 30 of whom work for the BHP Billiton mine .
Iron ore mine
In 1948 the British-Australian raw materials group BHP Billiton opened an iron mine on Cockatoo Island. Many people moved to the island to work for BHP.
