The King Sound is a large gulf in northern Western Australia .

It extends from the mouth of the Fitzroy River and to the Indian Ocean . It reaches a length of 120 km and is on average about 50 km wide.

history

The first European to discover the Gulf was William Dampier , who came there on HMS Cynet in 1688.

Philip Parker King explored the coastline in 1818 and named the area Cygnet Bay. The area was later approached by John Stokes and John Clements Wickham on the HMS Beagle in 1838. The King Sound was eventually named after its discoverer, Philip Parker King.

geography

The port city of Derby is located near the mouth of the Fitzroy River on the eastern side of the Kings Sound. The King Sound has the highest tidal range in Australia and is therefore one of the highest tidal ranges on earth with a height of 11.8 meters near Derby.

In addition to the Fitzroy River, the Lennard River , Meda River , Robinson River and May River drain into the Gulf. The King Sound is surrounded by the Buccaneer Archipelago to the east and Cape Leveque to the west.

The traditional owners and former inhabitants of this area are the aborigines of Bunuba .

tourism

Close to Derby, there are sandy beaches on King Sound such as Quondong Beach, Cable Beach and Riddell Beach. The King Sound can be reached via the Derby Highway .

In the Sound you can dive for reefs or do fishing, go water skiing, wreck diving or all kinds of leisure activities on beaches and bays.
