John Lort Stokes

John Lort Stokes (born August 1, 1811 in Scotchwell near Haverfordwest , Pembrokeshire , Wales , † June 11, 1885 ibid) was a British naval officer .

Stokes took part in the famous voyage of the HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836 and as a lieutenant in the voyage under the command of John Clements Wickham .

In 1846, Stokes was promoted to captain and commanded the steamship Acheron , which explored New Zealand for four years.

In 1863 he retired and was promoted to the rank of rear admiral . In 1871 he became Vice-Admiral and in 1877 Admiral .
