HMS Beagle

HMS Beagle is the name of eight ships of the British Royal Navy so far, named after the dog breed Beagle :

  • The first HMS Beagle (1804) was a Cruizer-class sloop that was in service from 1804 to 1814.
  • The second HMS Beagle (1820) was a Cherokee-class sloop with 10 cannons that was launched in 1820 and converted into a research or survey ship in 1825. From 1831 to 1836 she carried out a research trip with Charles Darwin on board. After being used as a customs boat since 1846, she was sold in 1870.
  • The third HMS Beagle (1854) was a wooden screw gunboat that was launched in 1854. In 1863 it was sold to Japan and renamed Kanko .
  • The fourth HMS Beagle (1872) was a schooner that was used in Sydney from 1872 to 1883.
  • The fifth HMS Beagle (1889) was a sloop that was included in the lists of active warships from 1889 to 1905.
  • The sixth HMS Beagle (1909) was a destroyer that was launched in 1909 as the lead ship of its class, used in World War I and sold in 1921.
  • The seventh HMS Beagle (H30) was a B-class destroyer. After being launched in 1930, it was used in World War II and scrapped in 1946.
  • The eighth HMS Beagle (A319) was a Bulldog-class survey ship, launched in 1967 and sold in 2002.
