Derby is a city in the Kimberley region of Western Australia . It is one of only three cities in the region with more than 2000 inhabitants (2016 over 3300 inhabitants). There is a lot of mining going on around Derby, including lead, zinc, diamonds and oil.
Derby was founded around 1880 and is located on the delta of the Fitzroy River . In 1922, Western Australian Airways opened in Derby, Australia's first regular airline . The destination was Geraldton .
During the Second World War, the city was attacked by Japanese airmen. The city also played an important role in the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia for the region.
The city is also the birthplace of Everlyn Sampi , an Australian actress.
