course

The Derby Highway branches off at the southwest corner of Curtin Air Base from Great Northern Highway (N1) to the north and runs along the western boundary of the air base. After approx. 30 km the village of Mowanjum is reached. Gibb River Road joins 6 km further from the east .

After a total of 41 km, the road ends at L och Street in Derby, where it turns into a four-lane street with a median.

Curtin Air Base

The abandoned Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base is east of the Derby Highway and north of the Great Northern Highway. It was previously used as a reception center for refugees and as a civil airport. However, it no longer serves any particular purpose.

tourism

The Gibb River Road, an outback track that gives access to the Kimberleys , ends at the Derby Highway . The highway also opens up many good fishing spots in the mouth of the Fitzroy River ; one of the better known is The Cuttings .

expansion

In recent years the Derby Highway has been gradually widened. The work has so far been carried out on a 15 km stretch and should be completed soon.
