Hook Island is one of the islands in the Whitsunday Islands off the coast of Queensland in Australia. The island is rocky and part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park . The island is officially counted among the Cumberland Islands , which James Cook discovered in 1770 and named so.
Island events
On February 12, 2008, a yacht ran aground near Cape Cove. The 37 people on the yacht were rescued by helicopter. This rescue operation was the largest shipwreck rescue by these aircraft in Australia. Two people were killed by the poisonous Irukandji jellyfish while snorkeling on Hook Island in December 2009 .
This island is home to the oldest archaeological sites in eastern Australia. At a site on Nara Inlet, the oldest finds by the Aboriginal tribe of the Ngaro were found in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park at an age of 9,000 years . The Ngaro-Sealtrail leads to this place.
Tourist information
The island has two beautiful fjords, the Nara and Macona Inlet. The island lies to the north of the mainland coast with coral beaches where you can snorkel and dive. Hook Island is home to the Hook Island Wilderness Resort, which is open to large catamarans on certain days. This resort has a restaurant and bar where food and snacks are available. The resort also organizes swimming, snorkeling diving trips and observations of the underwater world in an underwater observatory.
